After learning about that we discussed whether Columbus Day should still be considered a holiday after knowing the truth about everything he did. Would you want to celebrate the life of someone who killed so many people? If we are going to give a holiday to someone who killed people to get what they wanted, might as well give a holiday to Hitler too.

Columbus Day
In class this week, we talked about the story of Christopher Columbus and what the truth was of what actually happened when he sailed across the ocean to find the new land. No one ever told the full story about what happened. No one saw the true face of Christopher and how he and his people killed the native Americans on their voyage to find land. No one talks about the part of the story that shows how the Americans actually survived when they found land. If it had not been for the Indians that were already there, the Americans never would have survived through a winter.

I agree for the most part when talking about how no one really told the full story of what happened with Columbus. To answer your questions near the end I would say we shouldn't want to celebrate the life of someone who killed so many people, however if you are going to state that then we shouldn't praise so many war heroes as well because they killed many people too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the parts where you were talking about how no one knows the full story of what happened when Columbus was sailing to find new land. I don't think that Columbus day should be celebrated as many people are becoming more aware of what actually happened when he found the new land. As people learn, things will change and maybe this holiday will go away.
ReplyDeleteComparing Columbus and Hitler is very bold. But, I cannot disagree with you. The relevance and history of how white people (mostly) had an severe issue with thinking its okay to use and abuse other ethnic groups. Out of respect for Indians, I do not believe it is appropriate to mask the truth and continue to celebrate Columbus Day. My confusion is why and how it has made it this far.
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised also when I found out what all Columbus did. Its hard for me to understand why schools never told us the complete truth when we were kids and it was shocking to find that out. But what is history is history so I believe we should still celebrate Columbus day just because of the American tradition even after the stuff he did. I'm not saying the stuff he did was right by any means but it was history.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying about people not being informed about the full story of Columbus and what really happened when they discovered the Americas. I do agree that this man does not deserve his own national holiday but I think that comparing him to Hitler is a bit of a far stretch. Columbus went looking for gold and did not find much so he took the next best thing that would provide profit which was the Indians slave labor. Hitler was purely set on world domination. Either way, I do not think that Columbus deserves his own holiday and I think he gets a lot more good credit than he deserves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement. Who would honestly want to celebrate someone that has done horrible things to others? It’s crazy to think about all of the lies our schools have told us. this sort of whitewashing history is something that should be completely unacceptable. Especially when native Americans still suffer from what our government has done to them.
