The Speaker

My brother and I have always been into big speakers. We like to try to buy once every couple of years so we can play the loudest music. He called me saying that he found one, and it was the loudest one he has seen yet, but it was a bit pricey. The speaker clocked in around $500. Which in my opinion is way to expensive and he was thinking the same. None the less he picked me up and took me to the Best Buy.
Before we went, he told me he was quite certain that he was going to pass on it. He continued to show me the speaker and it was super dope; the loudest one that I have heard so far. We both looked at it and decided that it was the right decision to not buy it. At least until we met Aiden (the rhetor), the salesman on duty at the time. Aiden continued to use all three types of rhetoric on my brother; logos, ethos, and pathos.
He started with ethos. As soon as he walked up to us, he saw that we were interested in the speaker. He asked us if we had heard it at full volume, and obviously we did not because it would've probably resulted with us getting kicked out. So Aiden continued to turn the speaker up full blast and disrupted the entire store. Its no exaggeration to say the entire store was glaring at us. He continued to laugh and say that he was going to get in trouble because the don't know how to handle music. Ethos is shown here by building the idea that he likes the "thrill" of music too. This made my brother and I trust him because he shared the same passion as us. Aiden continued to pathos, by appealing to our emotions. He took us of the idea of that specific speaker and asked what type of speaker we have already, and what got us into speakers like that one. He got us to connect our memories of past good times to this new speaker making us emotionally attached. Lastly he used logos by talking about price he went into how the speaker stood up against the other speakers in the store. He went on to tell us why we were paying more for this one compared to the others and why it was the most logical one to buy. Long story short my brother and I ended up leaving the store with a dope speaker falling victim of the Rhetor.

  1. This is a great example of how rhetoric is use in the real world. It shows that what we are learning applies to the real world. I also like how you pointed out each of the three appeals and how they were used.

  2. I have to agree that places that sell stuff defiantly use a type of pursuasion to try to pull you into buying a product of theirs. I'm not saying that the speaker isn't good cause I'm sure it is with a price tag that it had on it but some salesmen use rhetoric and make it seem like its the best product in the world even though it might be the worst. I really liked your example on how you saw rhetoric in the everday world.

  3. Wow! That is so pricy but I’m sure it's a great speaker that you’ll use a lot. I’m sure next time you are in a situation similar to this one you will think twice about making a purchase like this one. I sometimes find it really hard to say no in certain situations like this because you don’t want to disappoint the salesman who you think could be a great friend in real life because they formed some connections with you. Next time you see a salesman coming you may want to turn the other way.

  4. I really like this example because it shows how sales people pull you into the "thrill" of buying a product. They tell you all the great aspects of the product to get you to want to buy it even more. I've walked into a store not wanting anything and walked out with 6 items because the sales people told me how great they were and that I "needed" them. The sales clerks also leave out the products disadvantaged sometimes which is misleading.

  5. I like how you compared a story in real life to what we have been learning in class. I also liked how well you explained how he used rhetoric towards you guys to buy the speaker. I feel like most salesmen are really good at the art of rhetoric whether they know they are using it or not because it is their job. These people have to convince people to buy things like in the book we read in class and how the salemsen convinced him to buy a car. My one question though is if you knew he was using rhetoric or not.
