Does Nick Naylor think smoking is good?
In the Movie Thank You for Smoking Nick Naylor persuades people to smoke but does he think its good?. He portrays it as good in the movie for his business but that's because he is trying to make money. In the movie Nick says "if I can get one of these kids to smoke I just paid for my trip". That shows its all a business he just is in it for the money, just because it kills people he could care less. As a lobbyist he has to portray it as good and get people to think the same way. There is evidence in the movie that shows us he doesn't think its good personally though. When they ask him in the movie if he would let his boy smoke he says no he wouldn't. If Nick thought smoking was good he would've said otherwise but as his job he has to portray it as good. Nick looking at smoking in a job standpoint he would persuade people to smoke but as a father to his son he wouldn't want his son smoking. Its all about the money and his job.

I believe that Nick just promotes smoking for his job. As he also states in the movie that it just pays for his rent. So, he is just promoting it so it will give him money. He doesn't tell his family or friends to do it, he just tells the public that it is okay because it is part of his job that he gets paid for. So, I don't believe that he thinks smoking is good he just persuades people to do it for a check.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Nick knows how bad are. Throughout the movie he talks about the statistics of smoking. All the linked deaths and other related problems connected to smoking. He only defends Big Tobacco because it is his job, and I can only assume that they pay him good to do so. He knows how bad they are, but he will claim otherwise as long as he is on the payroll.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this post and the comments. Nick Naylor wants a good paying job doing something he is good at...talking. If he is able to make money by doing that I don't think he would care what he is promoting.
ReplyDeleteI believe Nick knows the truth behind smoking and what it can lead too. I think it was just a job for Nick. Something to pay the "mortgage". I also believe arguing was something he was good at, so he ran with it. I don't blame him for that. When you find something your good at you should always pursue it. Although Nick's talent was not the best, that is what he knew.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Nick doesn't care for the health of the consumers and vouches for cigarettes only for a pay check. He did this job to "pay the mortgage".
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comments, as Nick is just doing his job as a talker. After all he has a family to take care of, being his son Joey.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Nick knows smoking is bad for anyone he said it himself in the senate hearing but he knows it is peoples choice not his choice.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting take on the movie and makes sense. It is such a harsh reality. His moral compass was definitely corrupt in my opinion. Nick Naylor is a prime example of someone using rhetoric negatively!
ReplyDeleteI think deep down Nick knows that smoking isnt a good thing but he just does it for his job and maybe even convinced himself that smoking might be good for you. He talks about how smoking kills thousands of people a year all the time in the movie and nick is a smart person so i think he can figure it out.
