Should you eat processed food?

Processed food is defined as when food has been altered from its original state to either make it edible, shelf stable, improve taste, or create a "new" food from multiple ingredients. This means that there are many types of processed foods and different levels to which food is processed. The first group is minimally processed which usually consist of fruits and vegetables, these food have not been altered too much from their original state and are usually high in nutritional quality. The second group is processed ingredients which are extracted from whole foods and usually contain additives to preserve freshness. The third group is processed foods which usually contain two or three ingredients that are processed from whole foods. The fourth group is ultra-processed foods which include artificial colors, dyes and additives, non-sugar sweeteners, and processing aids such as caking and glazing agents, and emulsifiers. The FDA does not require food companies to label all the chemicals and ingredients that are put into all ultra-processed foods. The same chemicals that are used to help keep cement sticking together are also commonly used to help preserve potato chips and keep them tasting better longer.
So what do you think about processed foods? Does the FDA need to do a better job on putting more restrictions on what chemicals food processing companies can and can not add into their foods? Do you think its okay to eat some processed foods or all processed foods, and do you think processed foods can have negative or positive effects on your own personal health.

  1. processed foods are a part of todays society and it is almost impossible to affordably and easily eat non-processed foods, it also has come to a point where most processed foods are not bad for you at all but you still get all the pros like shelf life and cheeper costs with the products in general. The products usually end up tasting better as a result with little to no harmful effects. I believe processed food is a part of modern life now and in most cases the food is just as safe as the non modified other options.

  2. I think the major problem with food in general is that people dont know very much about. If people have preached that diet is super important than why arent people teaching kids about this? in low income families they might not have the most money but if they were educated on what they were eating they could make the best with what they had. I would purpose a class in school about diet and make it more important. If schools taught this kids would be better understanding of what they were eating, especially in our country where obesity is a major problem. If diet and what we eat is so important then why is no one teaching it or trying to do something about it.

  3. I think that today it is almost impossible to find food that has not been processed. With that being said I think that it is the FDAs responsibility to label the food correctly. Consumers have the right to know what is in the food that they are eating. A lot of people do research on the ingredients that are in the foods that they eat, and when they are not labeled correctly it is like the FDA is deceiving the customer.

  4. To be honest I never understood what processed foods were and was never really worried about it. After reading this blog though it opens my eyes to the problem. I believe that the FDA needs to make a stand and help better regulate the issue. I don't know what kind of food I'm really eating and that scares me.

  5. Processed food is terrible for your body, so I agree with you. These foods are causing cancers and disease in our bodies and people don't even realize it.
