Why 21?
Have you ever asked yourself the question "why is the legal drinking age in America 21?" When you look at it, it does really make much sense because in our country you are considered an adult at the age of 18. When a person turns 18 they are able to do the same things that all other adults are able to do except for one thing, which is purchase and posses alcohol legally in any state. An 18 year old citizen in our society is able to own a gun, house, car, enlist in the military, and many other things except for purchasing alcohol. If you have ever wondered why this is it is largely due to political reasons. In 1984 there was a National Minimum Drinking Age Act set at the age of 21 and each state was largely influenced to enforce this act by the federal government because if they failed to do so they would lose up to 10 percent of their federal highway funding. Do you think that it is right for citizens to be considered legal adults in our society at the age of 18 but not be legally allowed to purchase alcohol? Do you think that the federal drinking age should be lowered to 18 to match the legal age restriction of pretty much everything else in our society and the legal drinking age of many other developed countries around the world, or do you think that the age restrictions of everything else should also be raised to 21? In your opinion, are you for or against the national drinking age in our country being 21?

i think the federal drinking age of 21 is just silly, why should the government be able to draft someone into the military but also at the same time not let them have alcohol? That seems ridiculous to raise the drinking levels to 21 especially when considering the fact that it is scientifically proven that once 18 your brain has fully developed so there is no difference between drinking at 18 or 21. The government has found a way to profit off this somehow and that is the only reason for this law.
ReplyDeleteI think the legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 because young adults are more likely to binge drink and get themselves into unsafe environments to do it. Kids at my school started drinking around 16 or sooner. If it was legal for them at 18, maybe some would be willing to wait till 18, but I really do not know for certain.
